What is the difference between VA and watts?
Watts (W) describe real power. Volt-amperes (VA) describe apparent power. The relationship depends on the load’s power factor: watts = VA × power factor. For a UPS shortlist, check both its VA limit and its watt limit against your equipment, rather than treating the two numbers as interchangeable.
An illustrative 600 W load at a power factor of 0.8 represents 750 VA: 600 ÷ 0.8 = 750. These are example load values, not a Toyama model specification or a final UPS recommendation. Allowance for growth and starting loads still needs assessment.
How long will a UPS battery last?
Ask for runtime at your actual load and the proposed battery configuration. Manufacturer runtime figures can differ substantially between full and half load; battery age and other conditions also affect the result. A VA rating is a capacity figure, not a promise of backup minutes.
First decide what the backup must achieve: a short window to shut equipment down, a bridge until another power source takes over, or continued operation for a stated period. Put that duration in the enquiry so the capacity and battery configuration can be considered together.
Source: Eaton’s model table and runtime notes. These illustrate the principle; their ratings are not specifications for Toyama’s catalog.
What to send for a UPS equipment enquiry
For a Dubai office, shop or equipment room, a clear brief is more useful than asking for a particular kVA size without the load details. Use this checklist:
- List the equipment that must remain powered, including quantities and available watt or VA ratings. Separate essential loads from equipment that can switch off.
- State the required backup time and whether the aim is shutdown, transfer or ongoing operation.
- Include the supply voltage and phase if known, plus any proposed rack or floor location.
- Describe expected expansion, available space and any existing UPS or battery system.
- Share the exact catalog series, model code and product-page link for equipment you are considering.
If a rating or site detail is unknown, mark it as unknown. Ask for the proposed model’s current datasheet and runtime information before confirming a shortlist. A general article cannot verify a specific installation.
Replacing existing equipment? Use the UPS replacement enquiry checklist to document connections, physical space, monitoring and transition requirements.
